Do You Need Qualifications to Work in Hotels or Motels?

I get this question all the time: do you need qualifications to work in hotels or motels?
Short answer: no. You do not need formal qualifications to get your first role.
In many cases, employers prefer a proven track record in a junior role over a degree with no hands-on experience. Entry-level roles are still competitive, but hospitality is often short-staffed and hires quickly.
If you cannot get front desk work immediately, start where you can. Food and beverage or housekeeping can still be strong entry points. Then move laterally into front office once you prove consistency.
Large chains such as Hilton, Marriott, Accor, and IHG can be more competitive. Many people start in independent properties first, build capability, then move into bigger brands.
Once you are in, progression is real. You may need to change properties to move up, but hospitality has clear growth paths.
Practical Advice
- If you have not started a degree, work in hospitality first and test fit.
- Learn from strong managers who run systems, not chaos.
- Build relationships and keep your network active.
- Leave every role on good terms, with clean handover and professionalism.
